Good question!
I'll definitely think on it a bit more... But I think Local is something that is within 'neighborly' distance. Like... "Wow this pie is awesome!", "Thanks, My gram who lives in Gorham, or my sis who lives in Scarborough grew these strawberries and the butter is from Smiling Hill." I've lived in places where there isn't a farmers market in every town 35-45 miles down the road, so "local" has quite a wide mileage radius. It's possible that here in Maine, Portland's "local" can be a smaller mile radius. I don't know that for sure. Portland is sizeable and I think could support quite a few farmers in the area. I have read that Portland is having a somewhat tough time supporting it's farmer's market. Do you know why this is? What is up with all the regulations? Has the market been thrashed years previous to warrant these regulations? I'd like to see people eating more from 'their own back yard'. I would like to see less 'trader joe's' type establishments... even though cheap is VERY nice... there is nothing nice about mass produced anything (including organic). I'm not saying I don't put my money into businesses like that... I am saying ideally ~ I'd have more will power and ideally it would be a common goal for Maine to feed itself. I'll do what I can to help that movement become a reality. Thanks for the question Larry, I'm glad you asked! I don't know if I'd ever really thought about it before. What is your definition of Local? |
