During the Summer 2011 market season, we began our Token Program at both our Saturday and Wednesday markets, as well as our indoor, Winter Farmers' Market!
You can now use your Debit, Credit, or SNAP (Food Stamp) Card at the market!
Here is how our program works:
1) BUY TOKENS: Purchase wooden "Market Money" tokens at the new Market Information Booth (see above) located at roughly the center of each market location. You may purchase tokens in any amount that you choose. You may choose from $1 or $5 token increments. There are green SNAP Tokens and black CREDIT/DEBIT tokens.
Credit/Debit token purchases include a $1 convenience fee that helps to support this important program.
2) FIND A PARTICIPATING FARMER: Look for signs (see to right) on each participating farmer's booth that read "Market Money Tokens Accepted Here!". You can purchase any food item that qualifies for food stamp purchases. (anything food item that is meant to be eaten at home). This includes vegetable seedlings! Finding a particpating farmer will be very easy, over 90% of the farmers at the market accept Market Money Tokens!
3) BUY LOCAL FOODS: Make your selection and purchase your items using your Market Money Tokens. If your total is less than your token's value, you can add a small item to your purchase, or pay the difference in cash. THERE IS NO CASH/CHANGE GIVEN BACK FOR SNAP PURCHASES. If you are paying with Credit/Debit tokens, you can get cash change back.
It's that easy!
The market is so happy to be increasing the access to locally grown, healthy food! We all deserve to eat well and enjoy the experience of the market. We hope that this program will raise awareness of healthy foods, encourage support of local agriculture, and our local economy. We are grateful for the resources and support that have made this program possible through an amazing partnership between Cultivating Community, Healthy Portland, the City of Portland, and the Portland Farmers' Market Association!
If you have questions or feedback, please let us know...the success of this new program is important to us!
